We highly recommend Mobil 1. My 86 has 250k+ miles and has always used Mobil 1 10w30. A common problem with noisy lifters is the oil filter. I have quieted many by changing to a factory filter. On up to mid year 88 16 V cars, the cams and lifters were oiled via overhead tubes with plastic connectors from the tubes to the bearing caps. The seals on the plastic bits deteriorate over time. Replacing them with the updated bits solves the problem. You will need all the plastic bits and a valve cover gasket to do the job. Another common problem if the engine has had any work done on it recently is the sloughing off of the commonly used silicon gasket sealers. They bits of silicon that get squeezed out between the mated surfaces eventually break free and travel in the engine. They can clog the oil passages and cause the lifter noise even if pressure readings are fine. For this reason, we no longer use silicon gasket sealer on engine repairs. LocTite makes an anaerobic sealer LocTite 518 that is much better and safer for the engine. It is the Saab recommended replacement for the timing cover gaskets on 16 V engines. Good stuff, although rather expensive.
