If your mechanic does not know what the sound is, then he is not a Saab mechanic. I would have the car checked out by qualified independent Saab tech. I had an 87 16V 900S I bought in 1995 with 110,668 miles. Totalled it this past December with 146692. Broke my heart because the car ran good. Now I have an 87 9000S I bought with 145,890. The car now has 156,504. Things you should check for as far as the noise you mention, include the A/C compressor, crankshaft pulley and or timing chain tensioner. It could be a bad belt. If the serpentine belt is worn, suspect the crankshaft pulley. That problem popped up on my 9000S. The A/C compressor noise was a warning sound. If the car does not check out, stay away.
