Subject: Re: Towing with 900S

I installed hitches on my '82 Turbo, '94 V-6, and '98 Turbo 900s. I recommend you spend the $$ for the Saab hitches, or make sure any aftermarket hitch is specifically engineered for the Saab. For the '82 (very similar, I assume, to the '86), the bumper does not need to come off -- there are 2 bolts in the body, just under the hatch lip, near the centerline. The Saab hitch bolts there plus into the long transverse wedge-shaped piece under the trunk and behind the gas tank. A supplemental brace goes in the stowage well next to the spare tire, from the well floor to the longitudinal brace. The limit, according to the book, is 1000# without trailer brakes and 2000# with brakes. I recommend you keep to the 1000# limit if going any distance or above city speeds. My 8-valve Turbo pulls my 1000# rig (sailboat plus trailer) just fine up to 65 mph. I think it would be straining above that. My 16-valve Turbo pulls it effortlessly at 65, though I don't feel comfortable pulling it much faster for any length of time. --------------------- John R.
