Without the check valve, all the fluid left in the hose will dribble out at the headlights. I took mine apart, as the diaphragm had gummed up and clogged the ports, wouldn't work at all. Cleaned out the gummy stuff and put in a piece of polyethylene from a plain plastic bag as a temporary fix - it's worked fine for a year so far. Dave
