Jan; I had the same prob. I assume that you were driving at high speed on the autobahn. At high speeds in my '85 900T, I would smell gear oil. I found that that the gear oil dipstick seal/gasket became cracked after the bolt that attaches the dipstick tube to the exhaust manifold came off during some rough roads. I will be replacing it this week. -ray
