Rare for the 4 cylinder to develop engine problems unless it was not maintained. I have seen a lot of check valves in the oil pump stick, causing no oil pressure. before you commit to tearing into the engine, remove the right wheel and fender well plastic and unscrew the bypass valve in the side of the timing cover against the side wall down by the oil pump. There should be a spring and a plunger there. Remove them and check the plunger for burrs/roughness. Remove any with fine emery cloth. Wash the bore with brakeclean and change the oil and filter. While you are there if there is any leakage from the front seal, go ahead and remove the oil pump and replace the front seal and the o ring behind the pump housing. use a straightedge to make sure the housing is flat. See http://www.townsendimports.com/engine_folder/front_crank_seal900.htm for more info on what we do to the pump housings. This is written for the 900, but it applies to the 9000 as well. I have seen these cars driven a good ways with a sticking oil relief valve and suffer no damage after it was remedied. Saab issued a bulletin about it that said often the trash that caused the valve to hang is moved by the removal of the valve and you may not find any evidence of it. I advise using a quality oil in 10w30 viscosity and a factory filter. On turbos, we recommend Mobil 1.
