My '88 900T blew a head gasket at about 130,000 miles. It would go through an entire "tank" of coolant in a 5 minute drive, with no obvious signs of it at the tail pipe. It was very weird. After replacing the head gasket, the coolant stopped disappearing for about a month. On a drive down to Central California, it started losing coolant again. My first thought was that I'd done something wrong installing the head gasket, but VERY close examination revealed that the main lower radiator hose had a pinhole leak in it. The leak was where the hose cross over the block, but is obscured by the intake manifold. The leak was so small that the little water that escaped would be vaporized immediately at it hit the block, and no observable amount of steam or smoke would result. The other notable thing is that it wouldn't leak when left standing - the engine had to be running in order for the leak to develop. Very weird... -Justin
