It turned out to be the wiring loom around the engine that was causing the problem. There are some wires in a PVC tube from the alternator round the front of the engine, and down to the starter motor. The insulation on the wires inside the PVC was crumbling & the bare wires were shorting out, causing bad power problems & flat battery. The solution was I made a new wiring harness to replace it, and have not had any problems since. Cheers... Andy
