I had the same problem in my '85 900T. Do you also find the high beams get stuck on? What happened to me was I had replaced the bulbs with some 130/90 Watt bulbs which gave awesome light but unfortunately toasted the relay to the point of no return. A new relay from a wrecker set me back $20 and I went back to 100/80 Watt bulbs and haven't had a problem since.
