I had exactly the same problem on my old '85 900T. My mechanic said it's an old fault involving the grease packing in the bearings. The grease slowly works it's way out over time giving a little free space in the bearing resulting in that clunk under braking in reverse. He re-packed the grease in the front bearings and put in an extra shim to stop the problem re-occuring and I haven't got a single clunk since.
