Subject: high beam problem?

Before I start with my problem I just wanted to say that this is a very helpful newsgroup. I should have checked here before I spend $90.00 at the dealership. Well here is my question. I cant seem to get the high beams to work for longer than 45 minutes before it burned out the high beam side to the headlight relay. The regular head lights still work though. The only reason that I knew how long it took was after I purchased the relay and put it in, I started to smell something cooking. By the time I got the car inspected and home the high beams were dead. I went under the hood and checked the fuses but none were burned out. I then checked the relay and it smelled like smoke. Why would only thr high beam portion burn but not the other side. The high beams were not even on, so why the burn out? Shouldn't a fuse blow first before the relay? Being that this is a $90.00 mistake on my part (electrical parts are not refundable) how can it be fixed or checked? Sorry for all the questions but this one really puzzles me. Thanks in advance. dp
