On an 89 I think you have to unbolt the seat rather than just pull it up. When you get the seat up, the motor will be on the drivers side (assuming right hand drive.) The plug that goes into it sometimes falls out. This would be your problem more than likely. If you need to get the hood up now, open the boot and find on the drivers side (again assuming right hand drive) the bypass valve that is hidden under a flap of carpet. Pull it up and you will then be able to operate the top manually. Don't forget to push it down again when the motor starts working. Good luck! Eff Smith
