On Sat, 21 Nov 1998 19:00:05 -0600, just as I was about to see how much duct tape you REALLY need to stop a gerbil from exploding, Greg Youngen <youngennopsamcso.uiuc.edu> distracted me by babbling thusly: >My '86 900 8v transmission often balks and occasionally grinds when I try >this. Is this type of shifting, even when the gears easily >slip into place, hard on the transmission? No, of course not. Cars are fitted with clutches so that in the event of a spasm, you have something entertaining to do with your left foot, rather than try and discombobulate yourself. >Am I saving any appreciable >wear on the clutch by not using it so often? No. The molecular structure of the metal comprising the clutch bearings and actuator mechanism deteriorates in the presence of moderate to strong moron wave field emissions. >I've got an 87 Nissan pickup truck (135k miles), and prior to the Saab, >an 89 Dodge Shadow Turbo. Both of these cars are/were much easier to >shift without using the clutch and the Shadow I down right abused for 90k >miles without ever having any transmission problems. I think "abused" kinda gives the game away, don't you??? Obviously the Shadow's warranty had an idiot clause in it somewhere. Gotta respect Chrysler's confidence in their product. > What's up with the Saab? Is that a rhetorical question? Sheeeyit, boy. What's up with YOU? Sell the SAAB. You don't need a finely-engineered instrument. You need an old Chevy clunker that you can subject to your neanderthal driving technique (sic). It's a gearbox with synchros for the road; it is NOT a crashbox out of a Group A touring car. I really hope you don't plan on a career as a mechanic. I'd explain the benefits of semi-auto systems such as the Tiptronic to you, but I don't wish to burn out any more of those limited neurons. Go away, son. You bother me. -- Win95 Error: 079 Mouse not found - A mouse driver has not been installed.
