I don’t understand why everyone feels so defensive about their Saabs? Some people were downright offended! I’ve had two Saabs: old 900, and new 900 and although I felt that the old car was more solid, I equally enjoyed both. As a matter of fact I’ve had very few mechanical problems, only one major breakdowns in each car. I was also sure that when my lease was up, I’d buy another Saab, I was considering both 9-3 and 9-5. I drove them and felt like they were nice cars, 9-3 being more to my liking since it was smaller and felt more like a sports car, although, I really didn’t like the torque steer, especially when you need to come out of the corner fast. I had not driven a BMW then, and although always knew that they make superior handling cars, that manifested itself by winning all side by side comparisons with other cars of its class, thought like most of you here they are just the status symbols. To be fair, Saab convertible beat BMW 328I convertible in 94, but BMW won again this yet (per Car and Driver) magazine. Now you guys can argue that all the automotive press in the world, (American, British, Australian, German and Swedish is biased towards SAABs (they all prefer BMW 328I to 9-3 and 528I or 540I to 9-5) , but that is somewhat silly. Anyway, I drove both cars for myself, and at least to me, there is no comparison between the two. Has anybody who is so passionately defending SAAB driven new 328I or 528I? I might agree that on a daily commute to work there would be little difference between the two or Honda or Toyota, but take it to a twisted road and you will feel the difference. One caveat, however, those who live in places where it snows a lot, might do better with SAAB, although I don’t know why they don’t put traction control on 9-3, it may also help the torque steer. The rest of you don’t need FWD, BMW with traction control and snow tires will be fine for most situations. In conclusion, I think SAAB is a fine car, but it’s now a BMW.
