In some ways maybe so, but this cuts both ways for other products. For instance in Japan they are only allowed to sell (effectively at least) Japanese rice which is different to say american rice but is also probably much more expensive. > meyer_bnopsamejanews.com wrote in message > <74p8tk$tje$1nopsam1.dejanews.com>... > >In article <74otka$i0$1nopsam.news.technocom.net>, > > "Adrian" <anorthnopsamhil.co.uk> wrote: > >> Let me get this right? True which is why america is probably one of the best places in the world to buy cars! Look at the cost across all manufacturers and models if you don't believe me. > The UK and the EC, on the other hand, have exorbitant duties > on > >imported cars, which is the only way companies like Fiat, Rover and the > like > >can get away with selling the second rate vehicles they make. Don't forget however that we do have something called the EU supposedly single economy which is supposed to get rid of this sort of thing. For Rover their problems aren't as simple as saying they make bad cars. In fact half of the current Rover production are carbon copys of Honda's due to the now dead joint venture. My brother worked for about 10 months in a Rover dealership and what he noticed is that the cars themselves (i.e. the various components and overall design) are not bad rather the way they are put together. Really Rover should be ashamed of themselves! They have a special talent for getting alot of good quality components and then building them into cars which are basically lemons. My brother called new Rovers Boomerangs! you can guess why. > > In case you haven't noticed, the > >European auto industry has the highest cost salary/benefits structure in > the > >world. > > True. I saw an article on BBC2 a couple of weeks ago about productivity in Rover. The figures are shocking. They stated that the most productive car plant in Europe is the Nissan plant in Sunderland (UK) at 90 cars per man. The most productive in the world is a mitsubishi plant in Japan at about 160 (I think). Rover Longbridge scored 33. That apparently makes it just about the least productive major auto plant in Europe (I think the other one was Skoda). Surprisingly Rovers new bosses BMW have only slightly better productivity. I read somewhere else that the Nissan plant in Sunderland is the 5th most productive in the world, and is the most productive outside of Japan.
