I have a 1991 Saab 900 with ABS. I spend a lot of time driving in snow and generally ugly roads. Can someone tell me the "proper" way to stop on snow with ABS? Some preliminary tests showed I can stop considerably faster easing of the brakes before ABS kicks in than by mashing the pedal as some suggest. This is the first car I have owned with ABS and to be honest it kind of scares me. I left it alone last year because people swear it is a great saftey feature, but I am seriously considering pulling the plug on it this year. Locking your breaks on ice is not good, but locked brakes in deepish snow can be effective since the snow piles up in front of the wheel. My first rude awakening with ABS came when I went sailing through a stop sign (about 4" of snow on the road) because I expected my brakes to lock and they didn't. So I guess my question is this: do I (a) leave ABS and ease of the brake before it kicks in, or (b) pull the plug and go back to old-fashioned threshold braking? Please try to resist preaching or telling me a sliding car is a moving death trap, we all know better.
