(this is also referenced on the service and major service checklists in the service manual.) the haynes 9000 manual states 'there is no requirement to drain and renew the oil during the normal lifetime of the gearbox, unless repair or overhaul is carried out'. in the case of the 9000 consider also the lack of the drainage plug. siphoning the oil out is much more work than simply draining it via a plug hole. if oil changes and particle cleanout were necessary at major service intervals for the 9000, a magnetic plug would most likely be provided. how would any junk at the bottom of the case get removed without a drain plug? the gearbox lubrication/oil quality is obviously not affected during normal service. otherwise saab would direct the techs to change the oil and provide an easy way to do that. you did well by your '83, but i do not think that the gearbox oil change requirement exists past that model year if the factory dealer techs are not required by saab to do the same, regardless of what the owner's manual states. -- ladislav
