Nigel, I don't think the van reversing into your 9000 caused the problem. I have an 87 9000S 5spd. Check the oil level in your transmission and check the shifter coupler (shifter block). It looks like a small rubber milk bone sandwiched between two metal plates with four posts, two on each end. This is the main hook up between your shifter and linkage. Yours may be on its way out. The part has a dealer list of about $56. I had mine replaced in August for about $117. I parked, came out and had no 1st, 2nd, 5th or reverse.
