Hi, I had the same smell in my 85 turbo. While I was checking something else (with the engine running) I noticed that the fuel rail was leaking. There is a banjo fitting at the front of the fuel rail. A 17mm socket and a 17mm open end wrench is all that is require to remove the two washers. It was a simple fix for less than a buck. You should talk a look at the fuel rail wile the car is unning as all evidence of the leak disappear after you turn the car off. I hope you find your problem. Carl Jeffrey A.
