Subject: Re: Recommended Tyres For 1989 900 Turbo 16V 5 door hatch?

The only problem with these tires that are rated to last 40 to 60 k is that in order to get that kind of mileage, the rubber compound has to be hardened, but when you do that, you pay in terms of performance and safety -- that is if you push your car. Also, if you don't drive your car much, or say you have winter and summer wheels, it is quite possible that before you ever get 60k out of the tire, it will dry rot. Which leads to another point, and that is buy the freshest tire you can find -- even gumballs get hard as they get old. Look for the DOT number, required by US law, for date, that is the last three digits; e.g. a DOT # ending with 518, would mean the 51st week of 98 (or could be 88). If money is no object, then supposedly the Michelin Pilot's are about the best, and can go for upwards $300 a tire. As for manufacturers, there are really only a handful of manufacturers left. I can't recall for sure, but Nitto might be a Michelin, Falken a Dunlop. There are web sites that list the parent/subsidiaries.
