Subject: cold start question

Hello. My 86 900 with 125k miles on it has been exihibiting a strange behavior on startup in cold weather. The thing is, it does not always happen, and the severity is not constant as well. The car usually starts on the first try. After started, the engine begins to "pulse" (I can't think of a better term at the moment.). Usually this lasts around 3 - 5 minutes or so. The engine cycles from 1000 rpm to 200-3000 rpm. Then, at some point, the car starts to run normally. Occassionally, the car stalls out during this process, but not always. I've asked my mechanic about this but whenever it visits him, this doesn't happen. It's weird. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance. -- !todd erases a red dot!
