Todays engines are built with clearances, etc undreamed of 25 years ago. So a factory gas engine can be switched to synthetic on day 1. Matter of fact, Corvettes and Porsches are factory filled with synthetic. A locally rebuilt engine is another story--then wait until you are satisfied that oil consumption, if any, has settled and things are broken in.
