Greetings, I can only tell you of a similar experience with my '84 900S. The timing chain tensioner broke allowing the timing chain to knock against the timing chain cover, poking a hole in the cover. The tensioner & the cover were replaced to correct the problem. Not an easy job on an '84 but might be easier on a transverse engine???
