You're a little late on this one. The engine in question is the 3.0 liter 8-cyl in the 530i from 93-95. For some reason, BMW used a softer metal for the cylinder liner (nikasil, I think), and the high sulfur content of US fuel did indeed have an adverse effect. However, BMW corrected the problem by first discontinuing the engine for the US market, then recalling the model in question so they could adjust the engine management computer so that the engine would run a little bit hotter. The increased running temperature is said to have alleviated the problem. Every car company has their share of mistakes (witness the 3.0 V6 that GM shoved down Saab's throat for the 900).
