the following came from the saabusa web site:

"As long as the oil meets the API ratings as described in the owner's
  manual, and the oil changes are performed at Saab's recommended
  intervals, synthetic oil should be fine as an engine oil. However, the
  bonding properties of synthetic oils can be detrimental to the
  synchronizers of the transmission, therefore synthetic oil should not be
  used in the gear box. "
