I had a humming/buzzing noise on my 98 900SE that turned out to be a bad
compressor for the automatic climate control.  It happened usually right
after startup when idling (and sometimes other times when idling).  Either
accelerating or turning off the ACC would stop it immediately. 

Not sure if this applies to the 96 model year.
