I have to stress however that this is a bearing replacement job. He has extolled to me many times that the rebuild has to be done AS SOON as there is a sign of trouble i.e. noisy higher gears. Once you get into the state where some of the gears are shot then you are screwed. Screwed gearboxes have to be replaced and it is a shame that people will drive a car into the ground before fixing it. I have seen the internals of the 900 box and I have to say it is a bit primitive really. The physical size of each gear is very impressive and I can't believe that power alone would damage them i.e. there would have to be excess play somwhere to cause the wear. The biggest knightmare I have seen is the autobox out of an MB E class that brother had to shim, not an easy job autos.
