Peter, I had an 87 900S 16V 5 spd before I got my 87 9000S. Rebuilding your engine should not be that difficult, providing you have the skill, tools and parts. Converting to a turbo version is another story. It would far cheaper and easier to find and buy a turbo model. There is a lot more to it than just installing a turbocharger. With that year you are talking an intercooler and related plumbing, as well as the supporting electronics, hoses and etc for the turbo. I had an 83 900T for over 13 years...Unless you have money and time to burn, buy a turbo model. Ken Washington 87 9000S 87 900S 83 900T
