You can use the CarFax service. It costs about $19.50. I was advising a guy out west about buying an 86 900. He ran the VIN # through CarFax. Only the first two registrations had odometer readings. When he picked the car up to drive it to the pre-buy inspection, he found out why there were no more odometer readings. The car never made it to the pre-buy inspection.
