Subject: AC compressor and Heater

My very dear 1988 9000t has two unrelated, inconvenient problems; the AC compressor (I believe that is what it is called) makes a lot of noise, according to my mechanic that indicates the clutch bearings in it are gone, and the only fix is to get a whole new unit. At the same time he recomends not to bother until it actually blows. Any thoughts? Should I expect hell anytime soon or will I enjoy years of trouble-free but noise operation? My heater is also being a little temperamental. Most of the time, even though I set the climate contorl on "high," it will blow mild, almost cool air in higher fan speeds (2 or 3, on 1 I can feel the heat). On occasion it will blow hot air efficiently. Is that the infamous heat-blower telling me it is gone?? I appreciate any thoughts on the matter gentleman, thank you.
