Subject: Transmission problem - "fifth gear sliding mechanism" shot

After being rear-ended by an IQ impaired driver amd having all the body work & paint finished, I just sent my '89 900s into the local dealer to have the shifter adjusted. The car would not go into fifth gear without what seemed excessive throw and a lot of work. IThe 2 or 3 times I could get it into fifth, the backup lights came on. The car was fine before the accident. I thought the shifter just needed adjustment. The dealer's mechanic found that the shifter would engage all gears without the key in place and also found what appears to be some ignition lock damage. Left the car overnightb to have a look-see, per the insurance adjuster's approval & state farm's nickle. Found out tonight that the mechanic found a problem I have never heard of - the "fifth gear sliding mechanism " is shot. It is in the shop now, waiting for the insurance adjuster to approve something more. Might be a complete rebuild, might be a total. Can anyone translate the "fifth gear sliding mechanism" for me? Can the blue car be saved? I have a lot of time & money invested into her. Hate to see her go. eichler.
