Looseness in the shifter. Basically the shift linkage consists of a rod going from the shifter to the tranny. The rod is split in the center, with an assembly with 1 or 2 (can't remember) rubber things to prevent vibration being coupled from the transmission into the car. If the rubber partially separates, the shifter will feel imprecise and have more travel. If it completely separates, the shifter won't work at all.
