Subject: Shift-Up Results

Thanks to all for the assistance and insights reguarding disabling the shift-up (correct spelling this time) light on our new 1999 9-3. Here is what we ended up with - 1. Pull the fuse. Good thought. Like this idea best. Unfortunately, the 1999 does not have a marked fuse for the light. Not in the fuse holder on the left end of the dash, not in the fuse holder in the engine compartment. 2. Remove the bulb. Another good idea. After not finding a fuse, this seemed to be the next best cure. Unfortunately, the drivers side speaker uses a hole in the dash of about 3", much too small for my or my wifes hand, to fit through. Even removing the drivers side lower dash panel didn't allow access to the back of the instrument panel. 3. 5th gear selector switch. Okay idea. Without and complete wiring diagram available, this becomes a complicated task. Besides, this is a brand new car and a modification such as disabling this switch without the diagram could get real complicated. This idea will probably be revisited as time and distance permit. 4. Black tape cover. This is the least desirable solution. Again, a brand new car, all brand new car smells, bright and shiny, tight, quite, pure joy, and place a piece of black electrical tape on the dash panel? Tacky at best. But it works! Only a small area of reflection is detectable from the drivers position. Conclusion: KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid. One well sized and properly placed piece of black electical tape did the trick. We really love this car. In the first week of ownership, we've put 600+ miles on it. As soon as it get's it's 1000 mile service, we will be able to exceed the 4K rev limit (a bit, anyway!). It's used about a pint of it's break in oil and we've found nothing wrong so far. Well, I did find that the dealer inflated 1 tire to the proper 32 psi, and 3 to 40 psi, but so what? We love the car. Thanks again to all.
