Subject: cracked engine block!!!!

So there I was driving down the street in my 1991 SAAB 900, thinking about just how smooth the ride was. I heard this little knock--kind of like I had run over a rock or something. Anyway, I did'nt think anything of it--my car was still purring nicely and I was able to drive home and park without any noticable difference. Well....I came out a couple of hours later and saw about a quart and a half of oil running down the street!!! Upon inspecting the problem, I found the source of the leak--a T-shaped crack on the bottom of my engine block. However, there was no visible signs of scraped metal around the crack and the oil pan wasn't dented or scratched either-----This ruled out the possibility that I had run over anything to cause this crack. I am completely confused!! How come my engine runs perfectly with a cracked block. Am I completely wrong in thinking that it's a cracked engine block? Possibly a cracked transmission case?
