I had the same thing happen to my 88 900S about a year ago.  There was a bad
ground in the left rear light assembly.  I think the left rear assembly is
the main one for the rear lights on the car.  Everything runs through it.  I
ended up having to replace the entire assembly, which was about 40 dollars.
