The valve (the newer plastic one) was progressively seizing up, perhaps from using 'green' non-ethylene glycol antifreeze, and the knob gave up after some of that twisting. The rod, slip-fit and all could take, the knob couldn't. So who knows how to get the ball bearing back in?? About all it does is give a little click feeling at full off I think.
