Subject: 5 speed gear ratios

The last series of 9000 including the AERO have used a 5 speed manual transmission with a final drive ratio of 3.61:1. This makes the car more economical but is not a good choice for spirited driving. The later model 9-3 se has recognized the need for closer ratios in the lower gears and has finally offered a box that I would like to adapt to my 95 9000 Aero. The improvements over the Aero box are as follows.... final drive ratio is 4.05:1 this lowers all the gears about 10%. 5th gear was changed from .70 to .66 this raises fifth about 7% for a net change of about 3% in overall fifth gear ratio, small enough not to effect highway characteristics or top end. third gear was also changed to 1.18:1 from 1.12:1which shortens the 2nd to third jump. This is the closest one might come to a close ratio gear box for the street in a 9000. All of this lowers 1st gear ratio which is too low for the AERO already but I know of no recent saab transmissions that used anything other than the 3.38:1 first gear set. If there is another first gear set I would change it to. My question????????????? Can I adapt the 9-3SE gearbox to my 95 9000 AERO. Perhaps by changing end plates with the motor mounts ect. Is the input shaft the same on both? Is anyone else unhappy with the ratios in their 9000 5 speeds? Gary Montana
