One other factor they have to consider in America is who is buying and using
the car. In our lawsuit-ridden society, a manufacturer has to ensure that
thier car will be safe and have low emissions for its predicted lifetime.
This is in spite of the car-care habits of most Americans that are as
follows:
Tune-ups: only needed when the car stops running completely.
Motor: must have enough cylinders to enable the car to go at least
25,000 miles with only 2 firing.
Tires: only replace when belts are showing. Never pay more than $35.00
each. Bent rims are not a problem unless tires leak down completely in < 24
hours.
Brakes: make service appointment for next month when metal-on-metal.
*Never* change fluid. If "ABS" light flashes, mechanic will tell you "it's
a computer problem" and cannot be fixed economically. Fix by strategically
placing electrical tape to obscure light.
Suspension: never replace shocks/joints/bushings/etc. unless car won't
steer at all.
...and so on!
