Those are the first stages of transmission failure, it is headed towards a new trans. On the other hand, $700 is not a bad deal at all for an 86, be it a 900 or9000 model. Assuming your daughter gets some 20 or 30k miles out of this trans, that adds up to a couple of years worth of driving. A new trans will cost about $3000 plus labor, not worth it, and rebuild jobs on saab trans are usually disappointing. I would take the car, use the borrowed time to save some money and when the trans goes in a couple of years buy a newer car. Good luck.
