Subject: Check radiator level

My 1990 9000CD turbo has been plagued by this little warning light for almost 2 years now. It usually comes on when I am several hundred miles from home, and of course the radiator is always full. I have had the car to 3 different dealers who tell me (a) Just add a little water, it's very sensitive! or (b) We can't find any problem, so don't worry about it. The car does seem to run slightly warmer than I think it should at times (maybe two-thirds of the gauge), but never close to the red zone. The dealers all say it is normal, and would not affect the level indicator in any case. The coolant is always at the proper level in the reserve tank. I plan to replace the sensor ($43.20). It just pops in the bottom of the reserve tank. Could someone tell me how this thing works? It doesn't touch the coolant at all. Just curious. Phil D.
