Hi, I'll second Danny's suggestion, and bet you a beer that the bad earth that he refers to is caused by bad contact between the battery negative cable and the gearbox (or engine?), to which the cable is attached. It's a particularly exposed point which can get road salt, oil etc in it. Remove the braided cable and clean both the cable end and the corresponding mount point on the engine/gearbox with a small amount of petrol, then sandpaper (or a flat file). I used this method to fix a fault on my old 1983 saab 99, after the fuel and temp gauges started hopping around every time I used the turn signals . . .
