It's likely that this switch is shot. The '88 9000 has a two-wire thermoswitch, and you can just short the two leads after disconnecting them from the switch to see if the fan itself is OK. With the leads shorted, and the ignition on, the fan should run. This switch just screws into the radiator, and it requires a 30 mm deep socket to remove/replace. If you work fast, you'll lose only a few ounces of coolant between getting the old switch out and the new one in. Don't forget the gasket. On later 9000's (like the '91 I think) there is a 3-wire thermoswitch. The idea is the same but you have a two-speed fan, hence the additional wire. There is an explanation of this, and a suggested modification, on www.townsendimports.com (follow the links to the "cooling system" section). The price of the 2-wire thermoswitch is approx $16 plus shipping from Trollhattan, or around $44 (I kid you not) from my local Saab dealer. The 3-wire switch is undoubtedly more expensive. -- Ken Bell :: kenbellnopsamx.com :: (212) 475-4976 (voice)
