Subject: Used Saab Convertible vs New Passat???

I'm shopping for a new car and have been looking seriously at the Passat. A friend of mine has just gone back to owning a Saab after trying a Subaru outback and so I've begun to think about Saab. I owned a 1969 96 (boy, I wish I still had it) and my brother had a 79 99. I've always liked Saabs (was a fanatic when i had mine) but have shied away lately because of price and concerns with reliability. Well, now I've fallen in love with a 1996 900se convertible I found on my dealers lot. Will anyone with knowledge of this car please give me advice? It's a 5-speed. I know my friend has lots of trouble with the auto gearbox in his 1993 900s. The top is electric. I noticed the tops in the new 9-3's are hydraulic. Were the electric tops quirky? When did GM take over Saab and how does that relate to a 1996 900? Any idea about what I should pay for a 1996 900se Convertible 5 speed with 50,000 miles? It's in really nice shape. Thanks for any and all help!
