The screw was inside, down just within arms reach. So with the precision of a neurosurgeon I carefully reached in -- an knocked it down completely out of reach! I should have mentioned that it was neurosurgeon with a bad amphetamine habit. Oh well, this looks like a much easier (and cheaper) problem to fix than the cylinder having gone bad.
