Lift the resevoir cap while the engine is still running and the coolant is still moving past the parts of the system that would cause it to boil. See also Eric law's earlier posting re "bubbling coolant". > It occurs to me however that it may be > boiling over while driving and I havn't noticed because the gauge is always > reading normal (in highway driving, the gauge is below the midpoint, sometimes > moving above midpoint in traffic, but never getting into the red zone). > Yesterday I performed a compression test and got 135-140 psi on cyc. 1 & 2 and > 125 psi on 3 & 4. More likely due to a small amount of wear between piston rings and cylinder wall on 3 and 4, causing comparatively more blowby. A 10% difference in pressure readings is not so significant. Go for the CO test and see if you've got exhaust gas contamination of your coolant, as I suggested earlier. Guess you'll have to wait until you've got rid of the radiator cleaner . . . > I am in the process of flushing the cooling > system with a cleaner that should remain in for several days so I won't know > the results for a while. > > As an aside, I recently did a minor tune up and replaced the plugs. Sorry I don't have the expertise to judge. Anyone else wanna have a go here? This too is a very easy and cheap thing to test. Throw your old plugs back in . . .
