I've heard and read postings by people saying you can clog up screens, oil passages, etc. with these additives. I've also heard they are successful. I'm not crazy about that sort of risk. I've seen several people advocating doing a "slow flush" by substituting 1 quart of synth oil at the next oil change. I like the idea, though I never tried it. Sounds a lot safer. I might try this with the Saab we recently got (238,000 miles) Before I heard of that, I went full synth on a Volvo I bought w/180K miles on it -- the oil got really black unexpectedly fast and I wondered what was wrong. In retrospect, I think I effectively flushed the engine with synthetic oil. The thing runs like a brand new car.
