Subject: 9.3 - am I disappointed ?

Just purchased a new '99 9.3 2.0i Coupé. It's a really nice looking car, and the level of comfort is up to very high standards - the car feels very solid too. I've done about 6.000 Kms (3.700 mls) in under 2 weeks, taking it from Belgium to Vienna and back, and from Belgium to Monaco and southern France and back, under various weather conditions (very hot to severe rainstorm). Unfortunately, I must say I'm a bit disappointed by it. Especially the power (or rather lack thereof) and torque are not what I expected from a 130 Bhp car... Not only does it accelerate like a truck, but it also behaves like one, especially on slopes. I really felt stupid when I was overtaken by a Smart (for those not familiar with Smarts: these are the tiny Mercedes/Swatch city-mobiles which could easily fit in my Saab's boot) on a 4% slope, while pushing the pedal to the floor and being unable to go faster than 120 Km/h. Is this normal behaviour ? When I switch on the radio or CD (standard AS2 Saab), the center panel of the dash gets really hot, up to a level where I could easily fry an egg on an ejected CD. Again, is this normal ? (I have a manual airco, which was used almost constantly) I find it to be a very noisy car, especially the cooling fan(s?) - even when the car is brought to a halt... Also, the wind noise at speeds higher than 100 Km/h is rather disturbing. Not to mention that high-frequency engine noise when revving up... After about 2000 Kms, I got a message that the washer fluid was low...mind you, I didn't use the washer yet ! But I have used the washer several times since then without any problems (while that message keeps popping up). At 3000 Km, the front shield just cracked, from the very top (center), a bit down and then a huge 'scar' horizontally. It really just cracked, overnite, while being parked... Being a bit scared by that - and absolutely no Saab dealer in sight (southern France) - I call my 'famous' Saab Assistance (which is supposed to help me out Europe-wide, even with a flat). After 40 minutes of being put on hold (international call), I get someone on the phone who says I should just drive to a Carglass Center, where I have to pay upfront for the shield, so I _might_ eventually get my money back upon return... Yeah, right - so much for 'assistance' and 'insurance'. More stuff...the car leaks some fluid. Dunno yet what it is, and I didn't get any warnings 'till now. Could this be some water coming from the airco or something ? Last thing: the ventilation system really isn't able to cope with extreme weather conditions. Two people in the car, heavy rainstorm and an outside temperature of about 30 degrees Celsius: the car's windows got all damped within minutes, to a degree where I had to use a cloth to whipe the front shield ! The last time I had to do that must have been some early 70-ties cheap Japanese car... Other than that, the black colour is really nice ;-/ Back to Honda the next time, or am I overreacting ? -= Guy DD __________________________ Annex Hypermedia Design http://www.annex.be __________________________ And a slice of life http://www.annex.be/life __________________________ New version 6.6 is online !
