Actually, of all the cars I've driven in the past few days (VW GTI, VW Passat, A4 Avant, 2000 Subary Legacy GT, Saab 9-3, and BMW 323), the car with the best shifter of all is my '87 Integra. Surprisingly, my Integra's shifter is even better than the 323. Perhaps the cars that I'm test driving will shift better when they get broken in (and when I get more accustomed to their action). I found the Saab shifter to be decent, but a bit rubbery. The 323 was relatively notchy and at least once I had a hard time finding a gear. Again, it would probably get better with time. > > 8) didn't like having to flop the rear seat cushions > > and remove the head rest > > Flop the seat cushions??? To completely lower the rear seat, you pull the seat bottom cushions forward, then pull down the seat backs, remove the headrests from the seat backs, and also remove the hatch cover. On my Integra, you just pull the seat backs forward and remove the hatch cover. Don't have to bother with the seat bottom cushion or head rests. Of course, it also doesn't have rear head rests to protect the back seat passengers from injury... > > BMW 323 -- Nice car. Nice motor. Trunk is reasonable, > > but opening is small. Don't know what you don't like about it. Styling is clearly a subjective thing. You might not like the typical owner of a BMW, but the car itself is pretty sweet. Nice motor, good performance, great structural integrity, excellent handling. I do prefer RWD over FWD as I find RWD to be more fun. Poor traction in the winter can be solved by the traction control system and 4 snow tires (not all season tires, but snow tires). But they sure are expensive. > What about the S70? > Those look very nice, I'm going to try that also, but have reservations. I've heard some bad things about Volvo quality lately. But more importantly, they are expensive. I also understand that they are not very sporting to drive, unless you get one of the sportier models. The base model (without the turbo) starts at ~$30,000. Looking at www.kbb.com, it appears that you can't get a turbo and a 5 speed. Even if you could, it would be out of my price range. Jared
