Eric, I hate to tell you, but you're going about it all wrong! The heater core is accessed thru the engine compartment. Unfortunately, it's still not a really easy job. I'd urge you to get a manual ("air conditioning" manual from dealer about US$20.00). Basically what you have to do is remove the large housing under the windshield that encloses the blower motor (this is a perfect time to replace the motor, too, if needed). In order to make room for it to come out, you need to remove the FI brain, ABS brain (if present), wiper linkage, the mini-bulkhead directly behind the motor, and some other stuff. Good news is, once you've done all that, the heater core slides right out. BTW, when replacing it, be sure to replace the O-rings where the hoses go in! Have fun!
