I don't like airbags because I have problems with my lungs so for beginners, the thought of being in an accident with my windows down and having to breath in the fumes of post-air bag release scares me. My friend did for a very short while and she had a lot of issues afterwards with her lungs, while before the accident she had no problems; which leads me to believe that because I am in a worse position to start out with that the end result would worse. The point of an airbag is supposed to be to save my life. Secondly, I am afraid of it going off when it's not supposed to. A front-end collision is not necessarily grounds to deploy an airbag, not is a side-collision in my car since I don't have side air bags. I don't know at what point the air bags are set to release, but I have imagined a few practical situations where it could be detrimental to the situation to have it deploy. Third, my airbag is HUGE. WHY? There's no need for my steering wheel in my 1998 9000 CSE to bubble out like that. I've seen a lot of luxury cars with airbags and none of them are as obtrusive as mine. I want my glove compartment back, too. Making the whole thing an airbag is a safety aesthetic and has no use. Again, I have seen a lot of luxury cars with airbags and none of them have required the COMPLETE removal of the glove box. I have seen things on the new kinds of airbags that use a different vehicle for deployment which is supposed to be non-toxic. I will have mine changed when this is available, hopefully into a steering wheel that Saab is making that fits and isn't thick and big and ugly like mine is. My friend has a 900S convertible with an older-style steering wheel like my '88 9000S had and his has an airbag in it... I can't imagine why they needed an extra 4-6 inches for a bubble to fit in the airbag in my car. There's no electronics on my steering wheel so I wonder what else they had to pack in there that made it so big. The seatbelts in Saabs I have found to be AMAZING. I know this from being in ones in accidents and I've been very impressed. Wouldn't mind trading in my Airbag for a 5-point seatbelt instead :) Does anyone know if/when the new, more "non toxic" type of airbags are/will be available?
